Many people believe the holiday season is not the best time to buy or sell a home. But in fact, the opposite is often true.

Here are the top eight reasons to buy or sell during the holidays:

* The seasonal slowdown means competition for both buyers and sellers is not as keen.

* Buyers and sellers tend to be more serious this time of year, or else they wouldn't be in the marketplace-they would be out shopping or enjoying figgy pudding.

* Many people take time off from work during the holidays so they have more time to shop for a home or prepare their home for sale.

* Many companies relocate their employees in January, so December is an ideal time to buy or sell.

* Homes look and feel especially warm and inviting when they are decorated for the holidays. Buyers can often picture their own family in the homey environment you have created.

* You can choose to postpone your move until after New Year's.
